Buon compleanno, Ezio.

Papa had woken him up extra early to send him out on errands that sent him all around the city for half the day. Ezio was too groggy that early in the morning to object and by the time his senses were clear enough to form a coherent thought it was too late. Since he had already started on the errands he knew he would feel bad if he just quit in the middle of doing as his father asked. Even if it was his birthday.
But even he couldn't help but feel a little bit suspicious by the third time he was sent off from one recipient to another on the other side of the city just because his father's acquaintances said they had something else for him to pick up. It didn't help that the little packages were just begging to be opened and rifled through like the nosy son that he was. He left them alone though through sheer force of will and by the time he arrived back home he was too exhausted to be suspicious any more, his birthday all but forgotten in his mind.
When he arrived home the front plaza was empty and silent. He barely thought it odd in his state of weariness but if he had spared a moment for it he would have realized it odd for the time of day; his mother was usually out here, and sometimes Claudia too helping her with the flowers. As he walked inside he finally realized something was amiss. It was still much too quiet. Too still. For a family of six even if one area of the house had managed to find a quick moment's peace some other part was usually busy with someone doing something there. But Ezio could hear or see nothing and suddenly he was suspicious. And he had to admit a little bit worried.
He dropped the packages and rushed into the spacious sitting room where usually he could at least find his mother sewing and sometimes his father reading, where sometimes Federico was waiting for him with the chess board already set up and sometimes Petruccio staring out the window in fascination with some bird or another.
His eyes blinked at how dark it was in the room. The windows were covered for some reason and then--
"Surprise big brother!!"
Blinding light was sent across his vision as the windows were uncovered in a flash of cloth and he nearly fell to the ground as Petruccio leapt at him to give him a fierce hug. Absently, Ezio returned the hug as he waited for his eyes to adjust. He was startled to find that his entire family was here--even Father who had seemed in such a rush to get to work early that morning--smiling at him, standing amongst a gaily decorated room with fancy snacks set up on a table. As Petruccio took him by the hand and led him further into the room Ezio only had one question.
"No presents?"
He didn't see any on any of the tables, just enticing food and drink. He caught the tale end of Claudia's eye-roll as he glanced back at his family after looking one more time for the presents that surely had to be there if they had gone this far to make his day. "You're such an egoist," she said dryly.
His father laughed and shared a mischievous glance with his mother that told Ezio that he had been duped somehow already. His father walked up to him with a wide smile and draped his arm over Ezio's shoulder as he turned him back around towards the door. "You dropped the packages in the foyer, didn't you?"
The way he said it--without so much as a hint of disappointment or anger--and with entirely too much amusement lacing his tone of voice, Ezio got a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach that he knew what was coming next. "...I'm sorry, Padre, I just--"
"What are you apologizing to me for?" his father interrupted. "You should be apologizing to yourself--they're your gifts!" His father couldn't even hold the laughter back before he'd finished his sentence, and Ezio's head ducked in embarrassment as he realized what had happened. He had been sent out to retrieve his own gifts while his family prepared this surprise celebration for him. He wasn't sure whether he should be upset or amused.
He settled on a hint of both. "Father! Couldn't you have at least let me sleep in a little if you were just going to have me do all the work for my own presents?"
His father laughed some more and the rest of the family joined in while they showered him with hugs and kisses. Ezio stood around and endured it; he couldn't have been more happy if all of the Hosts of Heaven had swept him up to take him to paradise.
