Just watched Knowing. I liked it. I don't care if people think the ending is predictable/corny. I still thought it was a good film. I also happen to really like Cage so that helps. Sue me. But still I think I would have liked it anyway.

These are just thoughts I want to get out of my head. Things about the film. Spoilers if you haven't seen it.

Yeah, I liked the corny ending. I was really amused. It was laughable but I enjoyed it nevertheless. I have to say I was also amused by the allusions to religious mythology--or Christianity if you prefer. A second Noah's Ark at the end of the world. There were two deer, one male and one female, that the father saw on his way to the clearing. There were two rabbits. There were two children. I don't know if the other ships took other children as well as two of each other species but the obviousness is still there. Two of everything to rebuild. Noah's Ark.

The beings themselves weren't just aliens. They were angels. They had halos--the ethereal glow surrounding their inhuman bodies--and even wings--the white mist in the glow formed wing-like shapes, especially when they "flew" or floated upwards into the ship. The messengers of an unknown supreme being were just an alien race watching over us.

I'm not upset at the religious contexts--obviously--and in fact find it very ...pleasing? amusing. Not to say I'm anti-religion or atheist or anything. If I had to choose I'd say I believe but I just don't have a denomination or anything, nor actively acknowledge it on most days. It just is. Anyway that's off-topic for my original rant... I just find it amusing because it seems to be a theme lately. There are a lot of (really good) films and video games out there that I've been into lately that have that similar theme. The most obvious and my current obsession/favorite is Assassin's Creed. The second one specifically brought in the 'alien' versus religious significance into the equation of the story. On top of that one of the most likely scenarios mentioned as a possibility to the predicted end of the world scenario they're meant to prevent is a massive solar flare much like in Knowing. Comparing it is just amusing. On the other hand the difference is big--but along the same vein nevertheless. All religions, including and especially the old polytheistic ones, were the aliens. The Ones That Came Before. Or our makers technically speaking. We were their slaves until Adam and Eve stole the Apple of Eden from them. Then a war broke out. It was during that war that the disaster struck the first time. We had to band together in order to recreate the world. But our numbers were greater and they eventually died out. Now the same disaster is about to repeat and only clues left by this ancient race can prevent it from happening again.

Don't know how/why this suddenly turned into an Assassin's Creed rant but suddenly that brings up another comparison I found. Time capsule versus vaults that lead the way. Haha. But seriously. This theme--it's getting old, and maybe after 2012 passes by without any incident it'll pass--but you know what, I kinda don't it too much. As long as it's done in creative and exciting ways. Especially with all kinds of allusions to other themes. I love that sort of stuff. That's part of the reason why I like English so much. The subject, not the language. My major. Writing and the arts, all that allusion, that play on words and mysterious meanings behind this or that... I like it. I love it.

That's why I want to be an English major.

That's why I want to be a writer.

One day.

That...did not turn out as expected. Ignore that. Please.
