Title: Pleasant Dreams
Fandom: Gears of War
Challenge Prompt: --N/A--
Summary: Dom has a dream in the middle of battle.
Disclaimer: I don't own; not making money; don't sue.
Rating: PG-13 (for a curse word or two)
Note: Because I just wrote this out of the blue without considering my challenge table, nor did I think it fit into any of the prompts afterthefact, it does not have a challenge prompt. (Hence the N/A, duh.)

“Maria,” the COG soldier called out lightly. His voice could be surprisingly gentle when it wanted to be. He was searching for his wife. She was somewhere around here; nearby, too, if the sweet aroma filling his nostrils was any indication. He stepped into the small room to his left and smiled.

There she was, beautiful as the first day he’d set eyes on her. Grown up now, of course. Taller, womanly, and more elegant than ever the young tomboy she had been when they first kissed, but beautiful all the same. She always would be as far as he was concerned. He watched her stir something in a bowl for a moment before stepping into the sweet smelling kitchen of their home. Whatever she was cooking from the smell of it Dom was looking forward to its finish.

“Maria,” he said. Dom watched as his wife turned around to face him with a cute perplexity that quickly changed into a wonderful smile. He could never get enough of her smiles. He tilted his head to the side and gave her his own questioning look. Her smile seemed to grow exponentially even before he finished asking his question. “Where are the kids?”

“I dropped them off at your parents house, Dom. They’ll be safe over there while their parents spend some alone time together,” she replied, still all smiles.

Something about the way she phrased her answer alerted Dom though. The way she said “safe” so casually and instead of a more natural word such as “fine” or “content” or something else drew his attention immediately into a worried state. He couldn’t place it, couldn’t begin to understand why, and he knew instantly that the emotion showed on his face because suddenly Maria looked scared.

“What is it, Dom?” her sweet voice asked. Her fear began to grow into wide-eyed surprise and fright and for a second Dominic couldn’t understand why. He wanted to placate her, tell her it was nothing, but suddenly he was aware she wasn’t looking at him anymore but past him. He spun quickly on his heels but not quick enough to dodge the blow to the forehead by a Grub with a rifle butt aimed at his eyes.

He went down hard and he must have blacked out. But he could still hear everything around him. Maria was screaming. No, she was yelling his name.

“Dom! Dom! DOM!”

The last shout sounded suspiciously like Marcus Fenix rather than his wife. Dom’s eyes snapped open and there in front of him was the sergeant that Dom would always just think of as his best friend rather than superior officer. He blinked hazily at Marcus and realized that the rest had all been a dream. A very pleasant dream that had gone bad once he’d started to regain consciousness. He groaned and reached out a hand for Marcus to help him up.

Fenix obliged and pulled his friend to his feet. “Dom. You still with us?”

“Yeah, Marcus. That bastard must have hit me pretty hard upside the head, but I’m good to go now. Thanks.”

Marcus gave a curt nod and ducked back behind cover. Dom followed his lead. He glanced around and saw the rest of Delta spread out loosely: Baird behind a fallen column to the left and Cole barging his way through enemy lines dead ahead. (Leave it to Cole to run straight in and still make it look gracefully planned like the perfect thrashball play.) Dom glanced over at Marcus to his right but the sergeant was already back into the fight. Dom left any other words pent up inside him for a later time and joined in the fray with a straight-up curse at all the attacking Locust drones.

“Sup bitches!”

Squee! I always like how you write. And look! An entry! First one in... well, freakin' forever! Not that I'm one to talk...

There's only one thing I saw in here that jumped out at the beta in me: "Dom was looking forward to it’s finish."

Wrong form of "its," hon. Other than that, nicely done!
